Pedro is a typical production worker who earns a minimum salary. He lost his wife in an accident two years ago. But still, Pedro looks at life positively. He was left with his 2 beautiful kids whom he loves so much and gives him inspiration to live everyday. Talk about looking at the glass half full rather than half empty.
With every intention to give them education, he accepted a job which is 8 miles away from his home. Traveling everyday is unbearable for some but not for Pedro. He walks 10 kilometers up to the lakeshore, rides a boat for 1 hour, crosses a forest by foot before he reach the bus station in the city, and finally takes a bus for a 1 hour ride. He also does not mind the risk of traveling. There is a spreading rumor that a tribe of cannibals live in the forest- awaiting for preys.
Last June 6, 2006, Pedro was doing his usual work in the packaging section when suddenly he caught his little finger in the steel roller. He was rushed to their company doctor and was advised that the damage was severe that they need to amputate his little finger.
Pedro told himself:
“The heck! I am still lucky! It didn’t catch my arm!” So the operation was done the same day and Pedro was advised to take a 5-day leave. And since he is a contractual worker, a 5 day leave means 5 days no pay.
Pedro told himself:
“The heck! I will have 5 days to play with my kids. I am lucky!” So without regrets, he packed his things and gets himself ready to go home. He took the his usual itinerary. He rode the bus until he reaches the forest. He started to walk across the forest. Walk, walk, walk, and… stop.
It seems that someone is following him. He looked at his back.
Check..
None.
So he continued walking. When suddenly a trap caught him!

He found himself hanging upside down like an animal hunted as food. The tribe cannibals sprung out from the large trunks of the trees and eagerly carried him to their tribe.
When they reached the tribe, he saw a big casserole. He is sure; he’ll be the specialty for dinner.

His tears began to fall as he remembers his two kids.
“How can they survive on their own?” he said.
“God, why did you let this happen to me? I never complain on anything. I have been good to everyone and to you, Lord. Is this my reward? I never complained when my wife died. I never complained when I lost my finger? Or have to suffer the consequence of a 5 day force leave? But why do You let bad things happen to me?” He complained and dared God. He lost his faith. This is too much for him. Poor Pedro.
The cannibals started to undress Pedro. All bare, a cannibal (seems to be the tribe’s doctor) checked him. His heartbeat, his ears, his nose, everything.. just like taking a physical examination.
When Alas! The doctor shook his head and shouted;
“Not good! Not good for food! Little finger missing! Not good for food!” It was music to Pedro’s ears.

The cannibals let him get away as they do not have any use of him.
So, Pedro enjoyed the 5 day vacation.
And about his little finger? Well, it was all God’s plan. it was a blessing in disguise! Thanks God!
